| In the 60’s
and 70’s, I lived among the mountains of the North Cascades and chose
the name Enoch to begin my artistic and spiritual adventure. Enoch was a
Jewish prophet and teacher prior to the time of Christ. In modern times
he is still remembered for the "Book Of Enoch" which was
originally in a collection of apocalyptic writings.
Stupa is a Sanskrit word which means "to heap" or "to pile up," and refers to the the earliest stupas, which often were simply piles of rocks brought by pilgrims from their homes and left at a place of significance to their teacher and his or her students. Stupas are said to promote prosperity, good health, peace, and freedom from ignorance, and to help subdue fear, corruption, and pollution—bringing blessings to the land on which they are built, to those who build them, and to those who visit and venerate them. The stupa also symbolizes the relationship of earth, air, water, fire, as well as mind. The base of the stupa signifies earth and equanimity; the dome, water and indestructibility; the spire, fire and compassion; above the spire, wind and all-accomplishing action; and, at the very top, the jewel signifies space and all-pervading awareness. The stupa is a mandala, or sacred arrangement, containing all of these enlightened qualities.
